The men you see in the pictures above are Uncle George and Uncle Curtis. They were Grandma Naomi's and Aunt Jane's brothers. Both served in WWII. George came back, got married and moved to Georgia. Curtis never returned. He was last seen on the shores of Normandy, France during D Day.
One of his friends saw him sitting on the beach waiting for a ship to take him to a hospital in England. He had been injured, and was never seen after that. Little Grandma never knew what happened. Grandma Naomi spent years trying to find out what happened to him, as did Aunt Louise. The Army just had him as missing in action. All of this changed yesterday.
During my shift at the Family History Center I had a few minutes to do some research. I started reading some old ships diaries during the WWII Era. This is the quote I found from the ship the Malone.
"July 5 Removed identification from floating body at sea; Curtis Pound, 6964730, USA"
This is all it said. I immediately recognized some of the numbers in the serial number. Aunt Jane had given it to me years ago, and it was written in my address book. I came home, checked the numbers, and they were a match. I FOUND HIM! I continued on to research the ship The Malone that had found him. I eventually found a website Tin Cup Sailors, and found a man that served on the ship during that time. I found his phone number in Florida and called him. He was just as excited to talk to me as I was to him. He was able to answer a lot of my questions, and was proud to tell me of his grand adventures.
I spoke with his wife, and asked if I could call back later if I had more questions. She was thrilled, because her husband liked to tell his stories to anyone that would listen.
Although this puts and end to the hunt, the questions remain, how did he end up in the English Channel? Did he make it on that ship, but then passed away? Did the tide wash him out to sea during high tide? I'll have to talk with some Navy personnel to see if most of the bodies were buried at sea, but if he were buried there, they would have removed his tags.
Any opinions?
